IndieMade vs Squarespace
Squarespace makes beautiful websites that can also sell. IndieMade makes selling platforms that are also beautiful websites. For a working maker, the order matters, and so does the fee ladder under their $19 sticker.
| Squarespace | IndieMade | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price | $19/mo annual ($25 monthly), plus a 2% store fee on that tier | $15/mo ($12 annual), no store fee, ever |
| Transaction fee | 2% on Basic; 0% only from the $29 Core plan up | None, on every plan |
| Digital goods fee | 7% on Basic, 5% on Core, 1% on Plus, 0% only at $99/mo | None. Patterns and printables are just products. |
| Etsy | "This is a one-time import, not a sync", their own help center. Inventory must be adjusted by hand in both shops. | True two-way sync, with double-sale prevention |
| Commerce depth | Store features vary by tier; commerce is a capability of "a website" | Commerce is the whole product, every plan sells everything |
| Audience | "Entrepreneurs" and "creative pros", the words maker and handmade don't appear | Handmade sellers, by name |
Squarespace's published US pricing and their Help Center's Etsy-import documentation, August 2026. Payment processing is separate on both: you pay your own processor's standard rate, about 2.9% + 30¢ a sale with Stripe, Square or PayPal, and IndieMade adds nothing to it.
Where IndieMade wins for a handmade seller
The sticker price is the real price
Their $19 hides a 2% store fee, a 7% digital-goods fee, a +1.5% international card surcharge and a metered tax service. Our $15 hides nothing, your processor's standard rate is the only other line.
A sync, not a snapshot
Their Etsy integration imports once and goes stale, their own docs say inventory can't sync. Ours keeps both shops matched continuously, with stock re-checked at the moment of sale.
Digital goods without the tax
A maker selling $300/mo of PDF patterns pays Squarespace $21/mo in digital fees on the Basic plan, on top of the plan. Here that number is zero.
Selling is the point
Variations with per-variation stock, one-of-a-kind reservation, live shipping rates, promotions, review reminders, commerce depth a website builder's store tier doesn't reach.
The math, at maker scale
On Squarespace Basic, $500/month of physical sales costs $19 + 2% ($10) = $29/mo; make some of it digital and the 7% fee stacks on top. On IndieMade the same month costs $15, flat, regardless of what you sell.
